Charity Work
Many often wonder what a spouse club actually does or they may perceive us as a social group, but we do so much more. We provide needed necessities for those in dire need.
Although, it is hard for those from our host nation to ask for help through the AWWA and our 50 year relationship we are closing the the gap and ensuring that as a society we make things a better place for all cultures in the Okinawa Prefecture. The AWWA has granted over 2 billion yen to the facilities on Miyako Island over the last five decades.

On October 21-22, 2019, the KOSC joined the AWWA on a friendship trip to Miyako-Jima where we viewed 9 of the facilities that we have awarded grants to. It was very humbling to see the impact we have on the community there. The facilities there catered to senior assisted living, long term assistance, the mentally and physically disabled, and foster care.
Facility Highlight: Miyako hukushiai
The company could be compared Chip and Johanna Gaines of the sense that the organization is changing the community for the better and thinking out of the box in the ways they can impact the lives of individuals with disabilities.

They essentially are running 5 different companies. They have two hydroponic farms. Vegetable land and Tomato Land where the vegetables are organic and have a minimal human foot print. The organization hires disabled individuals with various disabilities and they each preform various tasks from planting, seeding, weighing, bagging, and etc. They run a Farm to table restaurant and Bakery, Taiheizan Adanasu, where vegetable from the hydroponic farms are used. Individuals with disabilities are also employed here. They prepare, serve, and clean up this delicious restaurant. In the bakery the employees can be viewed rolling, filling, and creating many delicacies that can be purchased on site or consumed in their restaurant. Lastly they grow flowers at one of the facilities where they then create temporary flower beds before being sold. Many of these clients live within the community at a residential home or with their families. The AWWA touches many of their lives in multiple ways.
Although we could only spend a short time with the clients of each facility the impact of their appreciation will have a forever lasting affect on us. We encourage each and everyone of you to consider the volunteer opportunities that the KOSC provides and the on island facilities we award grants to.
